Milewska, Monika (Poland)

Monika Milewska, PhD - historian and anthropologist, essayist, poet, playwright, translator. Assistant professor at the University of GdaƄsk.

She has been writing since the age of five, making her literary debut at the age of thirteen on Polish Television. She started her playwriting career with a piece written in high school, called “Savonarola”, published in a prestigious drama review “Dialog” and performed by the Polish Radio Theatre.  She is also the author of a book of essays “Vinegar and Tears. The Terror of the French Revolution as a Traumatic Experience”, which earned her a nomination for NIKE, the most renowned literary prize in Poland. She has won over twenty awards in poetry and playwriting competitions, including the “We are looking for a Polish Shakespeare” in 1995 (Polish ASSITEJ), and the Plays for Children and Young People Competition organized by Children’s Art Center in Poznan (1995, 2001, 2005). Her two plays for children  -”The Squirrel” and “The Adventures of the Famous Rodrig” were staged in puppet theatres. Both won the ATEST – the award of the Polish branch of ASSITEJ and some other awards. “The Adventures of the Famous Rodrig” was published in a bilingual English-Croatian “Polish Reader” edited by Teatro Epicentro, Zagreb.
