Megarrity, David (Australia)

David is a writer, composer, musician, performer, teacher  and theatre-maker. 

A recipient of the Brisbane Lord Mayor’s Performing Arts Fellowship, his innovative theatre works for children including Backseat Drivers, Ukulele Mekulele, Show, and Lily Can’t Sleep have played at venues around Australia and overseas. He has contributed to a number of other works for young audiences as a dramaturg.

David’s short film collaborations have won a number of awards and nominations, including Official Selection at the Cannes International Film Festival 2000. He has made a number of documentaries investigating children’s and young people’s experience, including Backthenrightnowlateron which screened at QPAC’s Out of the Box Festival in 2004.

He has created a number of soundtracks for stage and screen, which are now available on the Sonic Loom CD. His bands have included Friends of the Iguana and The Goodbye Notes, and he now performs as Tyrone, wielding his ukulele at events such as the Melbourne Ukulele Festival and venues like the Sydney Opera House.

In 2008 his first  picture book, The Empty City (Hachette Livre) was selected by the Children’s Book Council of Australia as a Notable Australian Children's Book. He is adapting it for live performance.

David lectures in Drama at the Queensland University of Technology, where he received the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence (Innovative and Creative Practice). David’s research areas include collaborative creation of new performance works, and the confluence of music, narrative and emotion.
