Karen Zacarías plays include the award winning Legacy of Light, Mariela In The Desert, The Book Club Play, The Sins of Sor Juana, the adaptation of the best-selling book How The Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents and award-winning children’s musicals (with music by Debbie Wicks La Puma) Looking For Roberto Clemente, Einstein Is A Dummy, Jane of the Jungle , Cinderella Eats Rice And Beans, Chasing George Washington, Ferdinand the Bull, and Frida Libre.
Frida Libre just had a world premiere at La Jolla Playhouse; Jane of the Jungle will premiere at South Coast Rep in June of 2012. Chasing George Washington and Ferdinand the Bull have been on national tours with the Kennedy Center and Childsplay, respectively.
Her plays have been produced at The Kennedy Center, Arena Stage, The Goodman Theater, Denver Center, Alliance Theater, Round House Theater, Imagination Stage, Berkshire Theater Festival, The Arden, Cleveland Playhouse and many more. Her awards include: 2010 Steinberg Citation for Best New Play (Legacy of Light), National Francesca Primus Prize (Mariela in the Desert), New Voices Award, National Latino Play Award, ATT/TCG First Stages Award, Finalist Susan S. Blackburn Award and a Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding New Play (Sins of Sor Juana). She has commissions from South Coast Rep, La Jolla Playhouse, The Denver Center, and Arena Stage. Karen is the playwright-in-residence at Arena Stage and teaches playwriting at Georgetown University. She lives in DC with her husband and three young children.
