WLPG is honored to present the 2021 ASSITEJ Inspirational Playwrights – Maria Ines Falconi (Argentina), Omphile Molusi (South Africa), and Suzan Zeder (USA). We received 13 nominations for 12 playwrights who write in 10 languages. Our assessment panel of 8 artists from 7 countries noted 2 attributes that stood out: mentorship and artistic empathy. The importance of providing training, guidance, and support to younger writers is paramount to these playwrights’ careers. The generosity extended to fellow writers also deeply informs their own writing. They create characters and situations that deeply connect with the lives of the young people who view their plays.
In a world that increasingly embraces nationalism, xenophobia, and intolerance, the role of theatre as a ‘greenhouse for empathy’ is more important than ever. All three finalists write plays that come from a deeply personal yet universal place, creating a theatrical world where young people can see people both like them and not like them – a rich artistic empathy that fills a theater space with simple humanity and wonder.
MARIA INES FALCONI (Argentina)
Some comments from her nomination and the assessment panel:
-She is a strong voice in Latin America and her plays has been performed all over the world. She is brave and writes about difficult subjects for a young audience such as disability, sexual diversity, war and conflicts.
-By dealing with difficult contemporary subject matter in a poetic, healing and unsentimental way, the inspiration she provides to other playwrights is the courage to not look away.
-Addressing topics related to children’s everyday lives, directly connected to their social surroundings, is of extreme importance for the development of the new generations.
-She has created and organized important international projects related to TYA like Taboo Workshops, Schoolyard Stories in Latin America, and the International TYA Researchers and Critics Forums in Buenos Aires.
-She inspires both through her work and by who she is as a person.
OMPHILE MOLUSI (South Africa)
Some comments from his nomination and the assessment panel:
-Omphile is an acclaimed actor/director playwright who is Artistic Director of the TsaMmu Theatre, which provides opportunities for a whole generation of young writers who will create original stories about South Africa.
-Being able to write about a country’s trauma and managing to bridge the two different sides is a great achievement and speaks to his strengths as a playwright.
-Through his brave voice, a living example of what is possible, Omphile has created an incomparable body of work that has contributed to the canon of great contemporary South African work.
-His work is infused with the need to tell stories stemming from extremely real and personal places There’s a fine sense of humor, a rhythmic quality to the dialogue which make the scenes breathe and allow us to empathize with the characters.
SUZAN ZEDER (USA)
Some comments from her nomination and the assessment panel:
-She is an alchemist of the medium and its possibilities for mending and connecting in divisive and discordant times.
-Perhaps the most extraordinary thing she has given us [all] is the reminder that children and their stories deserve our deepest engagement, laying the foundation for a new chapter in the evolution of TYA in the US.
-Her plays have been performed in all fifty states of the USA and 8 other countries.
-There’s a cry for humanity in her writing, an intense and moving atmosphere of reconciliation. -A loving and tender perception fills her characters with boldness and dignity. Zeder’s plays heighten the level of theatre creation for young audiences, offering them a new, fresh and hopeful perspective of life.
-She inspired countless playwrights to go on artistic journeys that led to authentic voices and the courage to write the things that previously scared them the most.

WLPG la Red de Dramaturgos de ASSITEJ tiene el honor de presentar a los 2021 ASSITEJ Inspirational Playwrights - Maria Inés Falconi (Argentina), Omphile Molusi (Sudáfrica), y Suzan Zeder (EEUU). Recibimos 13 nominaciones para 12 dramaturgos que escriben en 10 idiomas. Nuestro panel de evaluación, formado por 8 artistas de 7 países, señaló dos atributos destacados: la tutoría y la empatía artística. La importancia de proporcionar formación, orientación y apoyo a los escritores más jóvenes es primordial en las carreras de estos dramaturgos. La generosidad con sus colegas también influye profundamente en su propia escritura. Crean personajes y situaciones que conectan profundamente con las vidas de los jóvenes que ven sus obras.
En un mundo que cada vez adopta más el nacionalismo, la xenofobia y la intolerancia, el papel del teatro como "invernadero para la empatía" es más importante que nunca. Los tres finalistas escriben obras que proceden de un lugar profundamente personal y a la vez universal, creando un mundo teatral en el que los jóvenes pueden ver a gente como ellos y a gente que no es como ellos: una rica empatía artística que llena el espacio teatral de simple humanidad y asombro.
MARIA INES FALCONI (Argentina)
Algunos comentarios de su nominación y del jurado de evaluación:
-Es una voz fuerte en América Latina y sus obras se han representado en todo el mundo. Es valiente y escribe sobre temas difíciles para un público joven, tales como la discapacidad, la diversidad sexual, la guerra y los conflictos.
-Al tratar temas difíciles de la actualidad de forma poética, sanadora y sin sentimentalismos, la inspiración que proporciona a otros dramaturgos es el valor de no mirar hacia otro lado.
-Abordar temas relacionados con la vida cotidiana de los niños, directamente relacionadas con su entorno social, es de extrema importancia para el desarrollo de las nuevas generaciones.
-Ha creado y organizado importantes proyectos internacionales relacionados con el arte dramático, como los Talleres Tabú, los Patios del Recreo en América Latina y los Foros internacionales de investigadores y críticos de teatro para la infancia y la juventud en Buenos Aires
-Inspira tanto por su trabajo como por lo que es como persona.
OMPHILE MOLUSI (Sudáfrica)
Algunos comentarios de su nominación y del panel de evaluación:
-Omphile es un aclamado actor/director dramaturgo que es Director Artístico del Teatro TsaMmu, que ofrece oportunidades a toda una generación de jóvenes escritores que crearán historias originales sobre Sudáfrica.
-Ser capaz de escribir sobre el trauma de un país y conseguir tender un puente entre los dos lados diferentes es un gran logro y habla de sus puntos fuertes como dramaturgo.
-A través de su valiente voz, un ejemplo vivo de lo que es posible, Omphile ha creado una obra incomparable que ha contribuido al canon de las grandes obras sudafricanas contemporáneas.
-Su obra está impregnada de la necesidad de contar historias procedentes de lugares extremadamente reales y personales. Hay un fino sentido del humor, una calidad rítmica en los diálogos que hacen que las escenas respiren y nos permitan empatizar con los personajes.
SUZAN ZEDER (EEUU)

-Es una alquimista del medio y de sus posibilidades para reparar y conectar en tiempos divisivos y discordantes.
-Tal vez lo más extraordinario que nos ha dado [a todos] es el recordatorio de que los niños y sus historias merecen nuestro más profundo compromiso, sentando las bases de un nuevo capítulo en la evolución de las artes escénicas en los Estados Unidos.
-Sus obras se han representado en los cincuenta estados de EE.UU. y en otros ocho países.
-Hay un grito de humanidad en su escritura, una intensa y conmovedora atmósfera de reconciliación. -Una percepción amorosa y tierna llena de audacia y dignidad a sus personajes. Las obras de Zeder elevan el nivel de creación teatral para el público joven, ofreciéndole una perspectiva nueva, fresca y esperanzadora de la vida.
-Ha inspirado a innumerables dramaturgos a emprender viajes artísticos que han dado lugar a voces auténticas y al valor de escribir las cosas que antes más les asustaban.
