Genbrugge, Geert (Belgium) [Playwright, Director, Actor]

Geert Genbrugge followed acting courses at the Antwerp Conservatoire.  Later on he studied Effective Communication and finally he graduated at the Narafi Filmschool in Brussels.

He worked 5 years for a Flemish commercial television station. Because of his experience, he was asked to teach Directing the Actor, Effective Communication, Music in Film, Documentary and Filmanalysis at the Narafi Filmschool.

Meanwhile he wrote five monologues. First “The Queen of Sheba”, an adaptation of the novella by Knut Hamsun and “Champoleon” inspired by Champollion, the decoder of the hiëroglyphs, which he played himself. “Gerolimenos” , his third monologue, is about a designer of gardenlabyrinths, which was recently staged by the Reibekuchen Theater in Duisburg.

In “Monturiol” he dives to the bottom of the sea with the inventor of the submarine. And “The Rabbit Nation” tells the story of the Port of Antwerp through the character of a tailor. It was a project in coöperation with the MAS, the museum of contemporary art.

During a writing course in HETPALEIS guided by Suzanne Van Lohuizen, he wrote “Suitcases on the Road”, a playwright for children, which was staged for the first time in 2002. Untill now, it has been played by 9 theatre companies in Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany. In 2010 it won the first prize at the Theatre Festival “Westwind” in Dortmund, a member of the ASSETEJ and it was selected the year after at the HotInk at the Lark Reading Festival in New York.

He also wrote “The Camera Assistent” and “The Three Fairies”.
His plays are known for its humor and vivid dialogues.

He has written 2 children books, “Little Tsjok” and  “Cute Little Stuffed Buffalo”.
